Steve comments that cup volume is the primary factor. I think that's
correct, but needs to be combined with backbore size. Put these two together
and try the "pop test" (pop the mouthpiece alone against the palm of your hand).
As far as the instrument is concerned, the sound of the "pop" tells you almost
everything.
then there's the nut on the other side of the mouthpiece. That's where rim
details matter. They affect the player, but not the instrument.
