Although females don't generally choose to play tuba, directors often realize the oppurtunity to have them switch from flute to tuba. Due to the air needs of both the flute and the tuba, flutist make very good converted tubists. The year after I got out of high school a friend of mine told me that a neighboring high school had 6 female sousaphone players in the marching band. I thought he was just pulling my leg, but I went to one of the Marching Band contests that year and sure enough there was 6 female sousaphone players and no guys. I later chatted with them and was informed that most of them were converted from flute.
