Point well taken, and I concur. But Bernstein was RIGHT to Romanticize Schoenberg! He saw himself very clearly in the Germanic Orchestral tradition, and his music throughout his career is full of the rich colors and florid phrasing of the Romantics. It seems many people that can't get into Schoenberg miss this. Schoenberg and Stravinsky both have been quoted as pointing out the the greatest difference between them is that Stravinsky is a modernist.

That said, there is that famous recording Lenny made of John Cage's Atlas Eclipticalis, which sounds like Brahms if you stand back and squint...

Sorry to get off topic. Let me go on record as being a big fan of Cleveland these days...
