Hare are my definitions:

Cut: Remove existing sections of tubing; alter the diameter of what remains so that it goes together; assemble.

Convert: Redesign the instrument in a different key, which includes things like making a new tapered branch or re-routing a tuning slide.

Modify: Add features or replace components, such as changing from top action to front action, adding valves, replacing bells, and so on.

Most so-called "cut" tubas have had some of all three of these processes, if the job was done well. The main tuning slide may be cut, the first tapered branch converted, and the valve body or bell modified, on any of the project horns you see from Matt Walters, Joe Sellmansberger, Bob Rusk, or Sam Gagney.

My project horn, on the other hand, was merely cut.
