Easy to understand. English is one of the least consistent languages there is (probably THE least consistent). Add to that the whole 'melting pot' thing, with names from every part of the world, from every language, and many of them 'Americanized' by some well-intended bureaucrat on Ellis Island, and names are often plenty tough for all of us.
