Regular polishing of a well-maintained finish - Wright's Silver Cream thinned down with strong liquid detergent...scrub with bare hands or a soft sponge (like REAL sponge). Hose it off with water under pressure and pat it dry with a soft towel when done. This is F-A-S-T.
Cleaning up a horrible old finish - add some baking soda to the mix (above), or pre-dip the instrument in that stinky sulfur-smelling restaurant silverware cleaner.
The advantage of "satin" finish on an instrument is the same advantage as a "pebbly" finish on a the outside of a refrigerator.
