Dan,
This recording of Two (really, ANY recording of Two) is hard on the ears. After the lightness of One, he reportedly claimed to have a desire to compose "a symphony of iron and steel" and created a work of such density that he destroyed the score after hearing its premier. He said that it was too convoluted (or something like that). As a student, he was reportedly very weak at orchestration (of Rimsky-Korsakov's, no less). IMHO, his distinctive sound is due to this "weakness" (and the tuba world is one of the most fortunate of the beneficiaries).
The rest of this collection is a lot of fun to listen to--in the dark--in a really comfortable chair--feet up--LOUD! Enjoy it! Maybe you would be so kind as to post a review of this collection if you get it...many of us would enjoy your observations, I am sure.
Oh yeah; price...
I paid $35 for it at a really great used place. But it still had an original price tag, which was REALLY high. If you can get for $47 then by all means DO IT!!
