My problem with anhydrous lanolin is that eventually it takes up water and makes nice green goo out your slide brass--unless you have nickel slides. It also has a tendency to migrate. And I HATE the way it stinks up an instrument when it burns (as in when a repair is done).

Thére's lots of better stuff than lanolin out there. STP isn't bad if you apply it sparingly and clean up after yourself (alcohol works fine)--it lasts almost forever and doesn't corrode slides. I use in on several silverplated instruments and have no problems.

The mess that occurred when the original poster ran his polishing rag over the STP-laden surfaces is that the sticky STP picked the schmutz off his cloth and held onto it. STP doesn't corrode silver all on its own.
