Denny,
This may not be the answer you are expecting, but its all I can do after reading about your situation. I know you live in rural Nebraska (how's the skiing?) and you're probably a good distance from a university, but I'd look into going maybe once a month to a college to take a lesson with a tuba instructor. They should be able to give you good advice on your situation. Best case scenario, you get good lessons and learn to play the tuba really well. Worst case scenario, you can no longer play the tuba and end up changing to another instrument such as bassoon or something. Your worst case scenario (double reed jokes aside) isn't all that bad. You might need some additional orthodontist work as well. Check it out. If you really enjoy playing, a 100 mile or so drive once a month isn't all that bad. Besides, you'll get a good chance to bond with your folks and maybe even get a good meal on the road - and tubists LOVE good meals on the road!
