I wonder if that logic would apply to a smaller bore piston instrument. I don't believe I've ever seen a rotary valve tuba that had the 5th valve after the 4th. At least I don't remember one off the top of my head. With a piston tuba, which has a much smaller bore going into the 1st valve, I wonder if the smaller (than on a comparable rotary valve tuba) 5th valve would work as well. I've played only a couple of Rusk-cut horns and I didn't like either one. I never even got to the stage of comparing how the 5th valve performed.
