At about age 20, our lung capacity is at it's highest and from that point on, it goes down. At age 20 I had about 6.2 liter vital capacity and now, at 45, it is around 5.3. Several years ago, several orchestras lowered the retirement age from 65 to 55 for wind players - losing vital capacity was a major reason. For this reason, shallow breathing is a major problem.
Mr Jacobs always said "Don't get old." If someone knows how to do this (or find the fountain of youth), please let the rest of us know!
