I'm of the opinion that it is entirely dependent on the type of band in which the horns are being used. If you do considerably more parades than shows, as my high school did, sousaphones are the way to go. you'll kill your kids making them drag contras down the parade route. If you do more shows than parades, that may be different. Both offer a variety of visuals, i happen to think contras look cooler, but that's just me. I do, however, think that sousas play better and are easier to play while marching. While contras do look great, my experience has been that, if you're outside, nothing beats a Conn 20K.
