Steve, you are absolutely correct. I have learned, rather quickly, that you can't get to everyone. I refuse to change my standards, but realize not everyone can meet them. I continue to let those students know that I care for them and that I can help IF THEY CHOOSE TO ASK. I can't force them, but I try to win them over through consistency. I do this whether they are my concertmistress who is a first rate talent or my beginning bass player who is struggling with the bass and gangs. I do know when to say when. My private tuba students are subjected with the same standard: Approach Everything You Do With Integrity.
