A good friend of mine, who is also a very fine educator, left me an excellent piece of advice when it comes to being a teacher:

TEACH THE STUDENT, NOT THE SUBJECT.

Taking this into account, being a teacher isn't only about making someone a better tuba player (or whatever you happen to teach), it's also about helping them to be a better person. As an educator, you are a role model whether you like it or not. As Tony Clements said in his post, it is the teacher's duty to step in and put the student back on the straight and narrow, especially their parents aren't there to do so. Okay, out comes an oft used phrase that everyone's heard before: Lead by example. Simple as that!
