My college band used King silver-satin sousaphones. When all 16 of us really got wound up, we could produce enough volume to make your nose bleed in the 50th row. We had to to balance the other 275 players on the field. But we could put out that much volume with a good sound (most of the time - a few of us kuckle-draggers got carried away once & awhile). I don't think that amount of volume , combined with a good sound is possible with the convertible belchophones. They're just way too easy to overblow. Besides - the souzys are MUCH more comfortable to hold and play.
