While not a great admirer of his work, Prokofiev's 6th Symphony is a strong work. I like the tuba/bass-bone/bass lick in the middle of the first movement and have often used it with students to get the quick response in the pedal register that it calls for. The section directly following it is Prokofiev at his "lugubrious" best in the beautiful long line for the low sounds. This piece should be used on auditions. Last time I ever heard mention of it was the Boston Symphony audition Chester won. If it has shown up recently, I would like to know.
