Temperature effects on tubas?

I have a really old Russian tuba(late 60's or early 70's). It's really
sensitive to temperature differences. When still cold it has a nice,
fairly accurate upper register, but terrible tone in lower register.
As it warms up, the upper register gets weak, both in tone, and accuracy
(sort of like playing without valves), and the lower register starts sounding
good. I'm just wondering what would explain this phenomonom.
Can anyone guess why this is? Are all Russian tubas like this?
