Leave it in then. The following cluster sounds just as effective with the tuba muted. I did this for a conductor who knows what's there, and there were no problems. Some mute is very effective, the intro to Strauss Don Quixote, passages in Salome and Elektra, Bartok Miraculous Mandarin, Webern 6 Pieces - ALL muted. And those spots in the Etler Quintet. GREAT stuff. Using a mute is a pain in the ass, but I think these guys had a clue as to what would sound. I feel some of the current composers are bluffing their way through, have very little to say, and insufficient faking skill.
