I would suggest finding a touring group (especially a rock band) in your area, and taking a good look at the cases that they use for storing some of their lighting equipment. I have witnessed such a case rolling off of the edge of the stage and dropping 12 feet to the ground. (an outdoor venue) The roadies plugged in the light, and it still worked. I'm talking about the cases used to house the motion-controlled Vari-lites and Intellibeams. Those instruments cost as much as 20K EACH, and they are well protected from the crews, for whom the motto is "box it up & get outta Dodge".

They are babied until they're in the cases, then they might as well be the Samsonite suitcase from the old chimpanzee commercial. Should work for a tuba.
