First of all, you need to resolve any issues of trust you have between your teacher and yourself. That trust has to be solid for you to be productive in your lessons. I agree with you in that it would make me very uncomfortable to be selling tubas to my students, especially making money at it. In my opinion, it takes away from the credibility of the teacher's recommendation if he makes a profit on the sale of an instrument he recommends. I'm currently selling a tuba myself and I haven't even offered it to any of my students for this very reason.

Regardless of what your teacher says, you need to try tubas and find what works for you. That is the only way to buy a tuba and know that you've made the right choice.
