It'd be great if the terminology WAS used exclusively the way Ken K describes it... i.e. solely to denote octave.

But it ain't (so we all have to be aware of that).

The other inference of the "single" or "double" letter is to refer (loosely) to bore size (lo-o-ong before anyone ever said 3/4, 4/4, etc.)

EEb is commonly and often used, generally to refer to all E flat tubas except the really small 3 valve ones (which are usually but not always older instruments). Same deal with BBb tubas... there is commonly referred to "single Bb tubas" once again, smaller instruments, 3 valves... but still one octave lower than euphonium.

Nobody ever called G bass trombones "GG bass trombones" yet people have said GG quite recently here on TubeNet talking about those bugle and drum corps thingies. And I'm purdy darn sure they weren't referring to some blunderbuss with a fundamental length twice that of a G bass trombone (?) Let's hope not.
