Joe, the Kopprasch was a "de riguer" book for me in high scholl, college, and now. While some of them are tremendously difficult, the fact that they were probably propelled me ahead. I played them slow, nough said there. As for the Tyrell, in an old edition I have it says that they are presented to the Bb Bass player to give them something challenging to do. I agree that they are molded after brass band type music(no flames banders, I am one of you!!), but their intrisic value is great. They move around the horn well, lots of skips and fast scales, and are wonderful as bridge studies for double tounging. I believe that Tyrell, coupled with Kopprasch, and Blazevitch(there is a whole "nother topic) form a bedrock of solid technique trainers with good musical intent.
