It's hard to say what you will need to get a better tone. Sight unseen (and unheard) I would suggest taping yourself. The tape can help you to hone in on the sound you want. Another thing is to remember to use lots of WARM air. Not that this will work for YOU, but I sit down and just play long tones; I concentrate on tone and resonance. Something else that worked for me was to open my jaw more. I was told by a great player that my teeth were too close together; this really matured my sound. Again, this worked for me, so it may not work for you. Just try it out if you don't hear results simply try something else. The "practicing in the dark" thing is a cool idea.
