Aebersold suggests that beginners start with volumes 24, 21,
and 54 as well, and recommends #4 (the II/V7/I progression) for intermediate
and advanced players only (the volumes do not progress in order of difficulty).
Pesonally, I highly recommend 24; it will help you well into your advanced
stage. In addition to Aebersold, I have benefitted greatly from "Patterns
for Jazz" by Jerry Coker and others. It requires some knowledge of theory,
but it will teach you to recognize chord symbols instantaneously.
The biggest bit of advice I can offer is to listen to any and all
types of jazz on any instrument, ESPECIALLY the masters of the 50's and
60's. Aebersold also runs Double-Time Jazz; their catalog denotes
highly recommended recordings. You can obtain both a DT jazz and an Aebersold
jazz aids catalog through www.jajazz.com. Finally, see if there are any
jazz camps or workshops held in your area; the experience gained at a good
camp can be invaluable. GOOD LUCK!
