I, too, have a St. Pete and after a couple of months noticed some discoloration in the area beneath the thumb ring. I got two pieces of mylar, the stuff you can put in a copier to make overhead slides, taped them together long ways, cut it to fit around the the thumb ring, overlapped it around the horn, and taped it tightly to itself, not to the horn. I have not seen any interaction with the metal or with my hand, and the mylar is itself not noticeable on the horn.
