I haven't seen a copy of DCI (Drum Corps International) rules, but I believe that instruments in a key other than G are not allowed. Period. You may not have a choice.

Having played Contra for many years, I admit the horn sounding a G when you play a C takes some getting used. The music is read in the treble clef and fingered exactly like Bb Cornet music. If you don't know that clef, you should learn it.
