Hey 983 gang!

This is an extremely mouthpiece sensitive instrument! Ask Carl Webster about his tuning issues with the 983. We solved them at the Army conference. There are several models of mouthpiece that work well with this instrument and several that cause extreme flatness.

The 983 is a very free blowing instrument and thus requires a mouthpiece with a bowl shaped cup, smallish throat and a highly tapered backbore for it to play in tune. Mouthpieces similar to the PT-64, PT-65, PT-72, Dillon S1/S2/S3 should all work fine.

There has been one instrument that I have played (983) that was a true lemon. The rest of the ones I've been asked to play are in tune with the right mouthpiece.

Regarding the length of the pull of the main tuning slide. This is an issue we are addressing. However, if you need more pull...B&H can special order a longer tuning slide. We made one for Steve Call.

Email me if you have further questions about this stuff!

All the best! Nice to see some of you at NAMM in LA!

Patrick
