Just in case you're still reading this thread --
I've only owned one nickel tuba so far (a Czech-built Zeiss), and really, its plating has been virtually bombproof. Only an inexperienced torch-wielding goombah like me can even get it to change into funny colors.
Benefits: doesn't tarnish, hasn't peeled (at least mine hasn't), pretty resistant to corrosion of any kind, nearly impossible to strip (but I haven't tried), easy to make other repairs, can dampen the resonances, can be called "cool" if you like unusual things.
Drawbacks: doesn't "glow" the way silver does, very hard to get it off if you want to, not necesarily able to guarantee a good refinishing job, can dampen the resonances, can be called "ugly" if you don't like unusual things.
Whether the St Pete is worse than my Zeiss, I can't say. Mine might be close to 30 years old, and I don't know of any St Pete of the same age.
