To answer your question, both of the CC tubas are 5 valve rotary instruments. Mirafone is a good brand of tuba but it is sometimes difficult to compare them to other tubas. In my opinion, Mirafones seem to have a bit lighter sound then some of the comparable horns that you mentioned, but a little better response and projection. I now own a piston valve instrument made by VMI (who also makes B&S) and I find it almost impractical to compare it to my 188, but both are well built instruments of professional quality. In fact the two (188 & 186) play completly different irregardless of size. You have not contacted me but you may have contacted Jeff.
