Roger used the 186 for the longest time (as did Tommy Johnson, I believe) in the Phil. He switched to the 188 when it came out because it has a higher "ceiling" than the smaller 186.
Roger taught at a masterclass in Canada I attended last summer. For the final concert (they played a brass arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition) he needed to use a CC. He borrowed a friend of mine's 188 saying, "I haven't played CC in over a year." You never would have known.
