I have had to the good fortune to take a few classes with James Barnes at KU and he allowed me the opportunity to play his concerto for him (in preparation for my juries). He wrote this piece specifically for CC tuba in mind and reccomended that I play it on CC. The fingerings work well and it fits the tuba nicely. However, the last movement is VERY challenging on the big tuba. He didn't say not to play it on F or Eb, but simply encouraged me (and others) to do it on CC. Barnes himself is a tuba player, so he knows exactly what he wants. In the end, go with what you sound best on, but give the CC tuba a shot.
