I would guess that Thomas hasn't tooted on very many rotary valved F tubas!
The low D, Db, C, and maybe B can be quite challenging to get with decent sound on many rotary F tubas.
Strangely, the Yamaha 621, Yamaha 822, and Willson F tubas (maybe others) aren't plagued with this problem (or, in P.C. lingo: characteristic).
