I've seen a bunch of horns that you could by for 3 grand. Mirafone 186 BBb tuba's come onto the market all the time, from 2 grand on up, they certainly still are the 'standard' horn. A used king or conn can be a great choice also. My personal favorite has become an older Cervany, sometimes you find a dud, but many of these horns play and sound great and can get you in way under your budget.
