A comment about shelf liner in the lap:
I have tried a ping pong paddle cover sheet, which delaminated quickly.
I have also tried both supermarket sourced shelf paper and a somewhat heavier stuff I got at an RV camping store.
But - the best stuff I have found is the rubberized cloth they sell at Sears and some other hardware stores I've seen, which is meant for using with a router. The idea is that you put this cloth down on a work bench with the work piece on top. The friction of the cloth prevents the work piece from moving under pressure from the routher. I got a good size piece of it for about $10.00 USD. I have also seen it in black, which would be good for over black pants in a concert situation.

Of course, you need a tuba of a size and weight that you can comfortably hold it in your lap. This arrangement did not work for my Conn 25J. For that I used a TubaAssist --

Good luck in your search.
