You are describing what many pros can do with instruuments that they have spent a major amount of time doing. I'll dare say that you can identify pitch on any tuba or tuba related instrument as well as guitar. I would also say that you could probably identify the pitches that you use on testing instruments after repairs.

I am reminded of a double reed professor who could identify pitch on all double reeds, high clarinets and high saxes. He could not do the same on low reeds and brass. Piano and strings were also a stretch, all because of differing timbre.

I have never ran into anyone who actually took those classes and sucessfully became all absolute pitchwise.

BTW,...... Absolute pitch is not a cureall for in tune playing, and oddly enough, in tune listening. Those with absolute pitch suffer listening wise when colds, flus, sinuses, and other illnesses hit.
