I would like to add my tuppence worth to the interesting discussion on besson mouthpipes: here in the UK Besson produce a marching tuba for brass bands based on the 981, but it has a much more curved mouthpipe and a smaller bell. This tuba tends to go flat in the upper register, whereas the 'concert' model as we call it (the 981 described here) with the straight mouthpipe is much truer, and it also has a fuller tone in the lower register. I have played both versions, and I think what I've noticed is consistent with your experiences with the 981 and 983.
