In my opinion, bore size is only somewhat related to your concerns. You'll find large-bore instruments that are easy to break up and relatively small-bore instruments that have a massive sound without much edge. Don't worry about bore and judge each instrument on its own.
I think you'll find that if you want core in the sound, you have to put it there. I find that more difficult on instruments with a larger bore, but I consider that to be my weakness. Plus, these instruments were designed to be as open-blowing as possible, in addition to having a large bore. There are too many other trade-offs to generalize.
