I had a BBb tuba on which all of the G's worked better with 3. I have another on which high G wants 3, and another that wants 12 for the G's but 3 for the D below the staff. It's a constant learning process. Whenever I hear a student play sharp on a 12 note I suggest using 3 instead, and it always works. They are usually amazed.
