The larger the instrument the more sensitive it is to temperature variations and drafts. If the temperature near the floor is below freezing (as it was sometimes in the Syria Mosque when the Pgh Symphony played there) and about 80 degree near the bell the tuba is in big trouble. Tuning slide adjustments are not very helpful. The instrument goes out of tune in a crazy way and it may actually growl on it own as convection currents circulate from the bottom bow to the bell. I once had to leave the stage in a piano section of a Mozart because the tuba was making noises on its own.
