Interesting that a basic skill doesn't seem to be being taught. I do my best to teach moveable-do solfege in my volunteer work. When the kids finally "get it", it's like a light going on--all of a sudden, playing by ear and sightreading is easier; pitch sense improves dramatically. They're better able to look at a part and say "it goes like this".
But few kids really want to spend their time singing and many resist with tooth and nail--they gotta have the horn on their faces to make music, and singing is somehow embarrassing or for sissies--I haven't figured that one out.
