I think that this finger/pitch memory is what kept me from being able to successfully switch from BBb to CC a couple of years ago. None of the fingerings on CC ever felt right because they were a step off from what I was used to. However, since I learned trumpet fingerings as I learned BBb fingerings, I never had any trouble with crossover to treble clef British band fingerings or with Eb tuba.

Along the same line, I learned Eb alto sax fingerings first, and could play comfortably on alto or Eb baritone sax, but Bb tenor or soprano sax just feel alien to me. It's funny how the brain works (or doesn't).
