It is Donald Stauffer's master's thesis as written in the late 40's, and updated in 1988 or so. He shows many pictures of instruments, including some 1840's bass tubas and some really unusual instruments. He also provides a good snapshot of the pro tuba world as of the late 80's, and a good history that provides a different perspective than does Bevan. The book includes some stuff about the acoustics of tubas, which has been superseded by subsequent scientific work done since that time (ref, Benade, Fletcher and Rossing, etc.). I recocommend it for the history, both of equipment and some performers, more than for the scientific explanations.

It is self-published and shows it, but that adds to the fun of reading it.

I can't imagine not having it in my library. There are too few books on the tuba.
