On a tangent --

I knew a trumpet player who spent his formative years going for range & volume. To the ears of his college teacher, he had a tight sound, so he started working on playing as often as possible with his tuning slide pushed all the way in (it had been out pretty far by that time).

Result? His sound opened up, darkened, and smoothed out. He had previously been playing on the top side of the horn, using the slide to correct himself. But, with the slide back to "normal", he sounded, well, more "normal" (sorry, but it fits) and still had his screamer chops.
