The reason you were told not to pop your cheeks is because you need to maintain firm corners throughout the registers. It is important that you at the same time do not tense your cheek area. When you saw the others pop their cheeks it was probably in the low register where it wasn't really them popping their cheeks but it was them making the necissary adjustments in their aperture (the whole oral cavity) to play more of an "oh" sound rather then oo or ee.
