A friend suggested an interesting variation--start off by playing straight 8th notes at a good comfortable speed, then switch to dotted eight followed by sixteenth. Still the same number of articulations per minute, but now you're doing half of them twice as fast.
Supposedly, this will enable you to notch your speed up without dealing with the onus of trying to tackle straight sixteenths.
