Once a joe-schmoe like me learns how to:

#1/ comfortably read (not transpose) music and play BBb, CC, EEb, and F instruments...plus, I suppose, the Bb baritone (or see #3 below)

#2/ comfortably read treble clef and bass clef.

#3/ read (not transpose, but read automatically) at the octave (ie. string bass music and trombone/'cello music)

There are not very many clef situations that won't plug into one of these (above) applications.

Further, I'm not one who sat down and "worked hard" at this. The only reason that I've acquired these skills is because I'm old and have had time to explore them. Further, there was no long-term motive - only various individual motives (ie. "I want to play this tuba"...or..."I want to play this music.").
