I'm not sure of the exact material, but Crysteel was a term that Conn used because they claimed that their valves were "smooth as crystal and hard as steel," to quote an early Conn brochure. They claimed that their manufacturing technique allowed them to make their piston dimensions much more accurate so that they didn't have to be lapped into the casing and could therefore be made twice as hard as other pistons.
