Two of my faves -
Chicago/Solti; Mahler No.2 "Resurrection" (London)
Atlanta/Shaw; Berlioz "Requiem" (Telarc)
excerpted from the liner notes: "Berlioz's vision of the apocalypse was indeed massive. His score calls for....12 horns, 4 cornets, four ophecleides (replaced in modern performance by tubas)...in addition, in the four corners of the hall is to placed a brass choir composed of four trumpets and four trombones, plus two ophicleides(tubas) in one and four in another."
Grand total; 12 horns, 4 cornets, 16 trumpets, 16 trombones, and 10 ophicleides/tubas.
IMHO, Michael Moore makes an effective substitute for the 10 tuba players. :P
I have a couple of recordings that aren't commercially available from my year as a member of the Michigan State Wind Symphony that feature the gargantuan sound of Brian Pokorney on Bass Trombone. While they aren't my ultimate rocks-off low brass CD's (although the pedal A below C I nailed on one is a personal highlight), his sound is pretty staggering. One to watch, IMHO.
