Cup shape and volume are also important.
The PT-88 is quite large and bowl shaped; Peranntucci
calls them "German style" and some believe they produce
a brighter tone and work better with German style tubas.
Helleburg cups are funnel shaped, like a horn mp, and some
believe they produce a darker, mellower sound. The standard
Conn-Helleburg's cup is about the same volume or maybe a bit
smaller than the PT-88. The PT's numbered from 50 down also
have the funnel shaped cups, and are referred to as "American style".
The PT-50 is about the same size as the 88. The link in the Steve's
reply will give you a chart with the details on all the PT's,
but I don't know of any way to compare them with other brands. Mouthpiece
Express (.com) used to have a chart giving a few dimensions of some
of the more popular ones.
