Well, as always, this is a question of "not too much/not too little". I wouldn't want the tuba player to be soloist at all times, but that sometimes depends on the music as well. In Mahler 6, the tuba is like a super bass to the entire orchestra. In Bruckner, the tuba should probably just be more of a bottom to the brass section, and not really dominate the aural landscape so much (the 8th might be an exception to that). But I too don't like it when you can't hear the tuba at all. I saw the Berlin Phil. do Bruckner 9 under Barenboim in 1978, in the Philharmonie, and I couldn't hear the tubaist at all, even though he kept switching back and forth between two different horns. That, I didn't like.

On the other side of the equation, I have heard Bruckner 5 played on a 6/4 BAT, and it sounded out-of-place to my ears. I would have prefered it played on a smaller CC, or a biggish F.
